Benchmark: Well Woman Visits

Increase proportion of Healthy Start women participants that receive a well-woman visit to 80%.

ACOG recommends annual assessments to counsel women about preventive care and to provide recommended services such as screening and immunizations. A number of illnesses can be prevented when proper well-woman care is a priority, and even illnesses that can’t be prevented have a much better prognosis when detected early. In addition, a woman who has been receiving annual well-woman care is more likely to be in optimal health before any subsequent pregnancy.

A Performance Measure Resource Sheet is available summarizing recommended strategies and a selection of resources and evidence-based practices related to this benchmark to aid Healthy Start grantee organizations, partners and their staff in supporting the women and families they serve.

Interconception Care Project of California

Annual well-woman visits provide an excellent opportunity for health maintenance and preventive care, including preconception and interconception counseling. Under the Affordable Care Act of 2010, Medicaid and most private insurance plans cover these visits without copay. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists released these guidelines on recommended components of the annual visit based on previous evidence-based guidelines, current expert opinion, and the recommendations of a multidisciplinary task force. Recommendations on screening, laboratory tests, evaluation and counseling, and immunizations are organized into the age ranges 13-18, 19-45, 46-64, and >64.

National Center for Trauma-Informed Care and Alternatives to Seclusion and Restraint

The NCTIC is a technical assistance center dedicated to promoting alternatives to seclusion and restraint, and building the knowledge base on the implementation of trauma-informed approaches in programs, services, and systems. Provides training and technical assistance to community-based behavioral health agencies, criminal and juvenile justice settings, homeless and HIV service providers, domestic violence organizations, and state and federal agencies.

NHSA is committed to improving birth outcomes and health disparities that exist within communities of color throughout the US. The DAST is a 20-item instrument for clinical and nonclinical screening to detect drug abuse or dependence disorders. It is most useful in settings in which seeking treatment for drug use problems is not the patient’s stated goal.
